Estate Fencing On London Bridges Draws Criticism From Cyclists

Following the recent terrorist attack at Borough Market some of the bridges in the city have been reinforced with estate fencing measures in the form of security barriers, which have been set up in the cycle lanes to help protect people as they walk across.

These partitions were put up on Lambeth, Waterloo and Westminster bridges but cyclists have since complained, saying that the new measures make roads less safe for bikers and are in fact a crush risk, the London Evening Standard reports.

Author of Bike Nation: How Cycling Can Save the World and Guardian journalist Peter Walker posted on Twitter: “The high concrete barriers on Westminster (and one side of Lambeth) bridge make sense for security but could be perilous for cyclists. Again, not to necessarily say barriers should never be used, but I fear these haven’t been thought out 100 per cent for safety.”

A spokesman from the London Cycling Campaign observed that the organisation is fully behind taking steps to provide protection for those in the city, but added however that it’s important attacks of this kind are not allowed to hinder people going about their day, including biking safely around the capital.

And now it has emerged that these security barriers are also causing heavy congestion during rush hour in the mornings. Big queues were seen on Blackfriars Bridge this week (June 13th) as cyclists had to go into single file to make their way over the bridge. Campaigners have now said that although they recognise how important these barriers are, they must be properly installed.
